Earth's Baptism

Published in 2006 Lenten Devotionals, Triumphant Love Lutheran Church

Thursday, March 9 Baptism

And baptism…now saves you – not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
(1 Peter 3:21, NRSV)

The earth has certainly been cleansed with water in the last year: tsunamis, hurricanes, floods.
The outpouring of services and materials from volunteers has been inspiring. Strangers and friends formed teams to coordinate efforts. People gave of their time and talents generously.
I think to myself, “Why? Why have these water-related disasters happened so close together? Is one reason to help us remember our baptism?”

Because God grants us hope and new life through Jesus’ resurrection, we are equipped to provide hope and new life for God’s children who have suffered.

We are baptized…
…to start anew with a clear conscience
…to serve God’s children in need
…to understand that we are all vulnerable – just one catastrophe away from poverty, homelessness, or death
…to know that we broken sinners can offer a listening ear and a helping hand
…to acknowledge God’s blessings
…to understand that we are not in control
…to love
…to pray.

Dear Lord,
Please be with all who suffer and help me be your instrument for service, love, and prayer. Amen.
